attached is a sketch of what i'm stuck on. mostly its about if i'm on the right path. the formula i used was for a simply supported beam with a load somewhere in the middle. but for my application i have a support in the middle with the loads out on the ends. am i right in useing this equation because you can basically flip the FBD upside down? second thing is, once i have that figured, the beam profile is given, i'm just not sure where to go from here. i'm trying to see if this beam can take 5,000 lbs with a safety factor of 3. its been a while since i've done stuff like this. |

Miscellaneous thoughts:
(1) The beam doesn't know the difference between the supports and the loads. All it knows is the moments and stress caused by their application. (2) Your single support point makes me very nervous. The arrangement you've shown is instable, has unbalanced moments, etc. Have you summed the moments? Will the structure at the mid-point support the resulting moment and cantilever loads at that point? What happens if one of the loads varies, or disappears? |

plus its not that off-center in real life. when i draw a FBD and its close but not quite center, i'll just show it offset, even if its a little extream just so at a glance i'll remember its not centered...understand? but i think i'm working it out anyway. my boss and the other engineer are in China this week, and i've just started. i dont think they expect a ton out of me yet, and without seeing their work i think i've pretty much figured it out. |

well there are two supports, one for each side, i just had it broke down to the one side. the lift will need to support 10,000lbs, so 5,000 per side. |
