Question on how to design locking mechanism?

    Hello everyone!

I will be quick to point out that I am not an engineer, but do have a great interest in many things engineering related. I come to you looking for some sort of guide about locking mechanisms. I am not even sure if that is the term, but just think of a microSD card holder in a modern cellphone. Where can I learn about mechanisms like this? Perhaps an overview of the various key principles in locking a component in place, with popular designs cited as examples...

Secondly, if I were to have something similar to an sd card retention mechanism designed, what engineering qualifications lend themselves to this type of project? This is the domain of a mechanical engineer I would assume, but is there any field that is more specifically focused on such things?

Thank you for taking the time to read my post!

    Welcome to EE!

I believe that there are the following three write protect methods used on Micro SD Memory Cards:

    - Mechanical write protect switch (Host responsibility only)
    - Card internal write protect (Card's responsibility)
    - Password protection card lock operation.

I think he/she is talking about the stainless steel spring loaded carrier that holds the memory card inside the phone?
