I have an application where I have to consider lifting a load with a single eyebolt at 90 degrees. I am getting conflicting information regarding the safe working load of an eyebolt in this application and was wondering if anyone had a definitive answer.

You can use the eye bolt if at 90 degrees if you consider the bending moment at the fixed end using

Mc/I for the tensile stress at the fixed end and the shear stress at any point for a circular section it would be

4/3*F/A

where

F=force

A= crossectional area

The size of the eyebolt  would be dictated by keeping these stresses well below the yield by at least a factor of 4.

As you probably know, eyebolts do not like to be stressed with respect to pure shear. They are really designed for axial loading. The capacity of the eyebolt will depend on the size of the neck and material. I would contact the manufacturer for some additional information.

If the application would allow, replace the rigid eyebolt with a swivel hoist or pull hoist ring. These rings will allow angular misalignment without hurting the lifting capacity. Most rings have a 5:1 safety factor with a lifting capacity range of 650lb to 17,000lb.

Hope this helps.

Thankyou very much for the response. Do you know of any uk suppliers (preferably with websites) that I could contact regarding this equipment.

Thanks

Dominic

I'm not sure about the UK but companies like Carr-Lane, MSC Supply, Reid Tool, and others would sell these items.
