Heat Loss by Free Convection from a Horizontal Pipe Formula and Calculator

Convection (or convective heat transfer) is the movement of heat energy from one place to another due to the movement of fluid. Convective heat transfer involves the combined processes of conduction (heat diffusion) and advection (heat transfer by bulk fluid flow). Convection is usually the dominant form of heat transfer in liquids and gases.

Eq. 1

Q = hm · π · D · L · ( To - Tb )

Where:

hm = Heat Transfer Coefficient (W/m2 K)
D = Diameter (m)
L = Length (m)
To  = Final Temperature (K)
 Tb = Initial Temperature (K)
Q = Heat Loss Rate (J/s)
